When my daughter first found Adventure Time while watching Cartoon Network many moons ago, I found myself immediately drawn to the show.  I immediately recognized the show as satirizing the RPG/Fantasy universe’s that I grew up playing games in and reading about. Over the years the creators of Adventure Time have proven that the show is more than a simple one-note fantasy satire, it is a total fantasy universe complete with its own broadcast of characters, and unique history.

The series takes place in the land of Ooo 1000 years after the so-called Mushroom War brought an end to civilization. Post-Apocalyptia for this civilization has long ended, however, and what is in its place is a civilization built on the remnants of the old using technologies from our Earth’s present, and recent history, but in the context of a bright colorful, yet medieval/middle ages-esque setting.

The show’s primary characters are Finn and Jake, a 12-year-old, and a dog who are also brothers. The show tends to detail their adventures from very broad fantasy tales that involve Finn going on a dungeon crawl, to Jake dealing with becoming a Father with his Rainicorn wife. The show offers a mix of written and visual comedy that will appear to viewers of all ages, and can certainly be a show enjoyed by both parents and their children. This is especially true if that parent is a recovering dice roller.

Adventure Time is brought to Blu-ray in a 1080p VC-1 encoded transfer preserving the show’s original OAR. The transfer for the Fifth Season of Adventure Time much like the prior few releases is simply stunning bringing the shows detailed and colorful visual style to life better than any broadcast of the show I’ve ever seen. The detail throughout the presentation is excellent, and the colors are lush and pop from the screen.

The audio is presented in a Dolby Digital Stereo soundtrack that sounds quite excellent. The dialogue and score come through nicely, and I did not detect any issues with the track.

Cartoon Network has provided some minor extras to the release of Adventure Time. Most of the episodes contain storyboards over the actual episodes if that option is selected. There is also a 16 minute BTS documentary.

 Adventure Time: The Complete Fifth Season is another fantastic series for the show, that evolves the character, and their world. The Blu-ray looks and sounds fantastic, and though the extras are slim this release is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
