Punch Line is a very very weird show. I thought at first it was going to be a cliché ecchi/pantie shot anime series, and for a long while it appeared to be. I won’t spoil things, but this is a show that does shift in tone for the better after its first half. The show opens with the bus-accident death of Yuta who is now a ghost. A ghost cat informs him if he sees 2 pairs of panties his excitement level with rise to such levels that the apocalypse will occur. He also lives in an all-female dormitory, so now the whole world is on the line. It also appears for a while that Yuta is trying to get his body back.
The artwork for this show is fantastic, and has a punchier (no pun intended) Kill La Kill atmosphere. The overall tone of the show is off the wall for much of the time, and that doesn’t entirely change even in the shows second half. What I’d like to do in a few months is go back and watch the first half with the 2nd half in mind and see if it plays different (not necessarily better, as I did enjoy the first). The score for the show is solid, and fits the tone of the show quite nicely. Overall, I had a blast for this one, but by the end it was for a different reason then initially.
Sentai Filmworks presents Punch Line in a splendid 1:78:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer. Everything here looks quite solid with really doesn’t have much in the way of issues. Audio is Japanese 2.0 HD with English subs and sounds clear and crisp. Extras include a clean opening and closing. RECOMMENDED.
