I don’t need to tell you, that the last 12 months have been difficult. But in the midst of this Severin Film’s mastermind David Gregory decided to shoot an extra feature for the Theater Bizarre anthology entitled “Tales of the Uncanny – The Ultimate Survey for Anthology Horror”, as he was restricted to get the footage via Zoom, one would think it would not turn out as good as it could have. Incorrect, David Gregory has been making documentary extras since the early 2000’s and all that experience has made it possible to turn out a fantastic documentary with footage dropped in from around the world.
Now while I say it started as an extra feature it became much more than that, and now sits on its own Blu-ray disc, in what I will straight out call one of Severin’s most worthwhile packages since the Nightmare Castle Blu-ray set. The documentary has a roster of over 55 participants including Joe Dante, Mick Garris, Ernest Dickerson, Larry Fessenden, Richard Stanley, and it does act as both a history and a survey of the genre. The participants talk about their love of the anthology horror genre, and the history of it, but then they touch upon the films themselves. Notable affairs like Tales from the Crypt and Creepshow get a lot of love and attention, and also more obscurities as well.
The whole thing is as informative as it is entertaining. It has a vibe of hanging out with some cool horror friends as they all discuss some great movies in your living room. This is one documentary that is going to get some repeat viewings in my house. The transfer on the Blu-ray is solid. The footage is only as good as the sources, but no one is going to really complain. Audio is mono English and sounds crisp and clear. The most notable extras are the 2 anthology horror films included here as extras Eerie Tales and Unusual Tales. These are French and German the former from 1919 and silent, the latter from 1949. These are wonderful finds and worth the price of admission themselves.
