OK, so I’m not exactly the go-to resource for modern mainstream horror flicks. However, when my wife told me that Freaky Friday had been essentially remade as a horror film, my first thought was WHY HADN’T THIS BEEN DONE BEFORE? And I knew I needed to see it! It’s a Blumhouse film though, and those guys don’t have the worlds best track-record with me. I did like the Happy Death Day films and Get Out (obviously), aside from that I’m not a huge fan of what I’ve seen.
So Freaky Friday opens with Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton) finding herself at the victim’s end of a ritual knife wielded by an infamous slasher in her hometown of Blissfield. Apparently, the dagger is some weird arcane object and when Millie wakes up the next morning she finds herself in the killer’s (Vince Vaughn) body. While the killer wakes up in hers. Millie, now thought to be the psycho-slasher has 24 hours to get her body back or the killer will be forever in hers.
This was a fun film. It has the vibe of a modern high school film (OK, a high school film, but I figure modern kids would dig this). The humor is on point for the most part with having 2 teenage kids assisting a hulking Vince Vaughn through his odd ball escapade. Further, Vince Vaughn playing a very feminine roll after some of his more recent roles is pretty hysterical. The violence for a mainstream film is pretty over the top at times, but not so much so that it would push buttons.
The Blu-ray from Lionsgate is a decent affair visuals are solid, occasionally murky, and some noise does trickle in form time to time. Colors are stable, and solid. The DTS-HD 5.1 English track sounds solid, and is well balanced. Extras include some deleted scenes and some minor featurettes. RECOMMENDED
