I really dig slice of life animes, they give me something to watch when I just want to chill and not really think about what I’m watching all too much. If the characters and situation are at the very least amusing, that will add to my enjoyment of the whole thing. Rent A Girlfriend falls into a unique situation. It’s a relationship anime with a “sugar baby” twist.
Rent A Girlfriend involves Kazuya, who has just had his girlfriend break up with him. It’s been a month, and he wants another relationship, just without the work. As such, he decides to rent a girlfriend, Chizuru, and it goes GREAT. Except he forgot that it went great, because of it’s scripted nature, and so now he’s angry, so rents her again to tell her off. But in the middle of this he realizes that he’s sort of tangled with her due to his Grandmother and her Grandmother being connected. Now Kazuya, is stuck and trying to figure out if he can even get out.
I’ve seen loads of harem animes, and stuff that kinda skirts topics like this, so I did not necessarily mind where this one goes. It’s not great, and then more “girlfriends” get involved and it gets more complex. Kazuya isn’t a great character, nor is he as complex as the writers probably wanted him to be. Chizuru, who kinda fills a relationship mentor character role, is probably the character glue that holds this series together with her charismatic attitude.
Sentai Filmworks presents the series in a solid 1:78:1 1080p transfer that looks fantastic. Audio is handled with Japanese and English MA 2.0 tracks with crisp and clear audio. Extras include a clean opening and closing. This is lightly recommended.
