When I first started hearing about RahXephon in the early 2000’s it was unfavorable comparisons to Neon Genesis Evangelion. Every review or blurb I read was simply about how the show was a knock off of the mid-90’s mega-hit, which has for decades been my favorite anime series of all-time. For some reason this made me resist the series for a number of years, until I started to hear back from people I actually knew, and trusted that RahXephon, while having elements in line with Eva, was its own thing, and actually quite good.
I took the plunge, and ended up loving it. Now we have a standard edition Blu-ray to replace the decades old DVD edition, and new viewers (and old wanting to see it a new light) can finally experience RahXephon the way it is truly meant to be seen (well until 4k happens).
RahXephon follows Ayato, Ayato lives in a society which has been at war with an alien species known as the Mu. This has been going on for about 15 years, and humanity are finally gaining the upper hand. Into this comes a woman Hauka who pulls back the curtain for Ayato, and begins to show him the reality of the situation, and the world in which he lives.
RahXephon is a really wild show. The art design is the first element that will strike most viewers, which definitely sets it apart from most series of the era. As the NGE comparisons are valid, this is a Mecha series, and the mecha designs are AWESOME, and fans of this genre will certainly appreciate that. The direction of the series especially in the high action moments is fantastic.
The Blu-ray is presented in the original 1:33:1 aspect ratio in a 1080p transfer. Everything looks great here with solid detail. Audio is presented in HD audio in both Japanese and English Audio tracks, and comes through clear. Extras are STACKED, we got specials, a movie , interviews, galleries of art, sketches, and seriously just so much to explore. This release comes highly recommended!
