Jeff Lieberman hasn’t directed a ton of films, but the films he has directed have struck deep into the minds of cult film fans. Squirm, Just Before Dawn, Blue Sunshine, and Remote Control are easy to recall just from name alone. After the early 80’s Lieberman directed some well-regarded documentaries before jumping back in with one more horror film Satan’s Little Helper in 2004.
Satan’s Little Helper follows the exploits of “Dougie” Whooly, a nine year old boy who is obsessed with the hand held video game “Satan’s Little Helper”. The game is a violent game in which you help the fictional Satan commit violent crimes. Dougie is a bit of a weirdo, so when he sees an actual murder being committed by a person in a Satan costume, he offers to be an actual “little helper”. Of course, Satan takes him up on his offer, and Dougie’s family thinks nothing of it, because they are all convinced that “Satan” is Dougie’s sister’s boyfriend a highly pretentious theater student, and he’s just in character.
Yes, this is all that weird.
Satan’s Little Helper is a perfect Halloween month film. It’s creepy, with a good hint of disturbing, making it also not quite a safe film. It also has a black humor streak a mile long which I really appreciate. The performances throughout are solid, and the killer design in the Satan outfit is a good mix of creepy and hysterical.
Satan’s Little Helper is presented by Synapse in a solid 1:78:1 1080p transfer preserving the OAR of the film. This was shot on early 2000’s digital so there is only so much that can be done here, but everything looks solid. Colors are solid, detail is fine, there is some minor blurring here and there, but overall it looks fine. Audio is handled by a DTS-HD MA 2.0 track and comes through crisp, clear, and without obvious issues. Extras include a commentary track with director Lieberman, a featureette, making of, a tour of locations, and a trailer. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
