The triple feature, ahem, sorry. I meant to say triple frightmare. The three movies contained in this release are all very short, one under thirty minutes and two around an hour. The run time is padded a little with AGFA’s always entertaining drive-in mode where they intersperse clips and trailers from old drive-in showings. Two of the films go by multiple names. “Love Goddesses of Blood Island” is also referred to as “Six She’s and a He”. “Follow That Skirt” also went by “Mondo Weirdo”. “The Undertaker and His Pals” seems to be the only one that stuck with its name.
Diving right into drive-in mode, there are some trailers and concessions advertisements. Then a baffling movie begins. “Love Goddesses of Blood Island” opens with a man being tortured and a voice over. The story contradicts itself multiple times. The hero is described as a soldier and pilot and at other times as an astronaut for NASA. He also mentions a war going on and the “goddesses” capture and kill a Nazi soldier. There are clues that it is the 40s but also clues that it is the 60s. Again, the movie seems to have no continuity. The movie is very low-budget, and the sets look cheap. The only times the scenery looks good is for a couple of shots where they clearly just filmed on a real beach. Any jungle scenes look like they bought a bunch of plastic plants from Hobby Lobby and set them up over AstroTurf. Most of the run time is women walking around in bikinis and making out with the pilot/astronaut. For such a sexually suggestive movie, it is very tame (although some of the outtakes are definitely spicier). Finally, after about 40 minutes of bathing and kissing, the women decide to torture their captive man. The movie become much gorier, but the effects are so bad that it is not really that disturbing. The man makes his move to escape and the film ends with one of those “the end…?” scenes.
After a few more clips, “Follow That Skirt” kicks off. A man in a suit and sunglasses stalks women and murders them as he complains about how they think they’re so beautiful. It’s a short film that is described as “a vortex of bad taste that would make John Waters proud”, but I think that massively over-hypes the content. There are only two murders but many more exposed breasts than the love goddesses. The film ends in a plot twist that did not do much for me. After the credits, they play a few more short clips before the feature presentation.
“The Undertaker and his Pals” is a movie with a high body-count, morbid content, and a lot of silliness. Three masked motorcycle riders pick a name out of the phone book and then go murder them. They cut off the legs and run away. Cut to a diner with the daily special listed as “leg of lamb”. The victim is shown in a funeral parlor with the worst make-up job ever done. The undertaker proceeds to try to over-charge the grieving family. As the story unfolds, the audience realizes that the undertaker and a local diner are collaborating in increasing the customers for the funeral home and getting free meat for the restaurant. Throw in a detective, a twin sister, and a very over-the-top killer the movie is a wild mash-up of tones. During some of the grisliest murders is accompanied by up-beat music. Another example, during a murder, a portrait on an end table changes its expression in relation to the events in the room. It’s a comedy with jokes that fall flat and also a horror movie with gore that ranges from cheesy to actual medical footage.
The disc includes the option to watch the movies without the drive-in clips. There is also an option to only watch the drive-in clips. There are outtakes from the love goddesses film that came from a much racier cut of the film. There’s also a photo gallery. The most entertaining special feature is probably the commentary track with comedian Patton Oswalt and Jackson Cooper from AGFA. The physical aspects of the release are nice. The picture There is a lengthy booklet with an essay on each one of the features. AGFA also included postcard with a reprint a “certificate of assurance” stating that the signer is physically and mentally healthy enough to watch these shocking features! I have to say that this release was entertaining, though I did not enjoy the movies as much as I thought I would. I’ve been wrestling with whether or not to recommend it. I love the drive-in format with the vintage clips, but the features did not impress me as good movies or movies so bad I was entertained. Maybe I’ve seen too many low budget gorefests, but I just could not get into these.
