Back in the nineties, there was an animated superhero show that appealed to fans of cartoons and environmentalists that helped people become aware of dangers for polluting the Earth. Of course, I am talking about Captain Planet and the Planeteers, which was the immensely environmentally based animation series that is still popular to this day.
The show’s synopsis as quoted by Warner Brothers “Five courageous teens from all over the world are brought together to embody the power of the elements and protect the planet. With their powers magnified, the Planeteers can summon Captain Planet to help because saving our planet is the thing to do! Captain Planet: The Complete Franchise features the voice talents of Martin Sheen, Meg Ryan, Whoopi Goldberg, LeVar Burton and many more!”
David Coburn is the voice of Captain Planet. As for the five Planeteers, you have Lavar Burton is the voice of Kwame, Joey Dedio as Jack Wheeler, Kath Soucie as Linka, Janice Kawaye as Gi, and Scot Menville as Ma-ti. Whoopi Goldberg (the first three seasons) and later Margot Kidder (seasons 4-6) voiced the character of Gaia, who selected the five people to be Planeteers.
Warner Brothers, after recently releasing the series on DVD, has decided to give Captain Planet and the Planeteers a Blu-ray release. This 9-disc set includes the original Captain Planet and the Planeteers series (1990-1992), as well as The New Adventures of Captain Planet (1993-1996).
The high-definition image quality overall looks incredible with rich, bold colors and transfers that look nice and glossy. The animation is simply robust and shines better than ever. There are few speckles and some minor print issues here and there, but nothing really to diminish the viewing experience. The only issue on the transfers were the opening and ending credits which appeared to be from a tape source due to the image looking rather soft and hazy, but outside of that, the picture quality is spectacular and should impress fans of the series.
For the audio English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (either in Mono or Stereo) is used for all 113 episodes of both series. These lossless soundtracks sound quite good as well and deliver clean, sharp and well-balanced audio presentations on every episode on this series. The dialogue, other sounds coming perfectly fine in high-fidelity. The soundtracks for Captain Planet and the Planeteers were done by three composers; Tom Worrall (who scored seasons 1–3), Thomas Chase Jones and Steve Rucker (both of them scored the final seasons 4–6). Each of the scores sound fantastic with them coming in clear and sharp on this release and dominating dialogue or other noises.
To break the options down even further, more specifically, the options are 2.0 Mono for the first three seasons, 2.0 Mono or stereo for Season four and Dolby Digital: English Stereo for the fifth and sixth seasons. No drop-offs, hissing or crackling were detected. I think fans of the series will certainly be appreciative of the audio options for Captain Planet’s Blu-ray! English SDH subtitles are available for this release.
There are no bonus materials for this Blu-ray release.
Captain Planet and the Planeteers should provide plenty of enjoyment and nostalgia for the nineties, perhaps more than ever with their lavish Blu-ray release! This set will look marvelous next to your Captain Planet toys, video games and other memorabilia! Highly recommended!
