What if you woke up tomorrow morning and realized you had grown horns and a tail? Oh and also that you have been entrusted by your ancestors as a descendent of powerful demons to wage war against magical girls? You’d probably go out and make friends with the first one you see, right? No? I guess this is where you and Yuko, the star of this silly and quirky anime from the folks over at Sentai Filmworks, differ, huh?
In season one, we saw Yuko’s demonic awakening after which she almost immediately befriended the local magical girl Momo after Momo saves Yuko from being hit by a truck. This puts Yuko in a bit of an awkward position since the only way she can alleviate her family’s curse of poverty is to murder a magical girl and offer her blood to her ancestor’s totem. Anyway, they soon become besties, along the way meeting and befriending another magical girl with an odd curse of her own. The last season ended with Yuko and Momo both learning some interesting revelations concerning their families’ shared histories and in particular the disappearance of Momo’s older sister. This season begins right where the previous season ended with Momo showing up to a meeting with Yuko, misinterpreting Yuko’s letter of challenge to a duel for an invitation to hang out and have fun for the day. It’s moments like this that really set the tone for the series with Yuko’s surface-level hostility masking a true friendship with Momo that endures. In a way, it’s a sweet idea, the lengths that both are willing to go for the other, Yuko taking on the responsibility of canvasing the city searching for demons that may have information on Momo’s missing sister and Momo willingly temporarily going to the “dark side” to save Yuko from her nightmarish sub-conscious. It’s really this friendship at the core of the show that makes this anime as likable as it is. For the most part it’s quite silly and isn’t the kind of show to take too seriously. And yet, I found it charming, anchored by the bond between the two leads. This season finds Yuko making more friends like a fox demon and a tanuki working at a local restaurant as well as having the two magical girls moving into her apartment complex on each side of her family’s place (with Momo amusingly always referring to it as a ruin). For the most part, it’s business as usual with a few new wrinkles like the ultimate fate of Momo’s sister being revealed. Still, if you enjoyed season 1, this season will give you more of the light-hearted demon girl hijinks you have come to expect.
The image is nice as crisp as one would expect of a newer series released by Sentai and the audio is available in both an English dub and the original Japanese, both DTS-HD Stereo 2.0 mixes with both sounding fine. On the extras front, we have… yes, you guessed it, clean OP and ED animations. But this time, like with Season 1, Sentai has included the mini episodes that were posted to Twitter to promote season 2 throughout it’s run. These little chibi series are fairly inconsequential but pretty fun at times, and it’s extras like that show Sentai Filmworks cares about the fans. Kudos, guys!
For those who enjoy the light and frothy in their anime, this wacky comedy about a demon girl and her best frenemy magical girl is sure to hit that sweet spot.
