I have a tendency to not watch things as they go live, but when I eventually get a disc copy of them later, so while I watched Season 1 of Overlord a few years ago, I had yet to get to Season 2 (or 3 for that matter). I do remember enjoying watching Overlord S1 when I saw it. The story for those who need a recap involved a dude who gets Captain N’d into a game as his character, but instead of a hero he’s a villain, and now he’s out to conquer his video game universe.

Well I thought that would continue here, but that sort of didn’t happen. In fact that guy was barely in this season. Rather we have 3 arcs over 12 episodes. The first involves a group of lizardmen tribes that band together to fight off Momonga’s armies. I’ll prefect this by saying he appears early on in this to sort of introduce the arc..sort of.

The 2nd and 3rd arcs sort of come together hard at times to see how they separate, but they basically involve another group of characters who fight against another group of evil characters called the “Six Arms” and basically how they strengthen and prepare for that role. The series concludes with an insane action packed episode, but it was too little too late. If this was a 24 episode series and some of this stuff was broken up through that, it could make more sense, but it feels like it was too short, and not enough of what made the series good to begin with.

The classic version Blu-ray from Funimation presents Overlord S2 in a 1:78:1 1080p transfer that looks quite solid. Colors pop, detail is excellent. 2 audio tracks are present an English 5.1 and Japanese 2.0, both sound excellent. Extras include commentaries, featurettes, interviews, and more RECOMMENDED.
