Suckers is a 1999 comedy crime-drama film directed by a stand-up comic and car salesman, Roger Nygard. This is the story of a group of car dealers who learn, to coin a phrase, “the art of the deal” on how to make ‘suckers’ out of customers buying cars. The story is a behind the scenes life of a car salesmen and what they go through during any given day, perhaps a little bit contrived in some respects.

The story focuses on the Southside Auto sales team trying to sell cars, ethically or otherwise, to customers but not without a few subplots and hijinks along the trail. One subplot has Bobby (Luis Mandylor My Big Fat Greek Wedding) down on luck and needs the money to support his pregnant wife Donna Deluca (Lori Laughlin, Amityville 3-D) .He also owes money to some loan sharks which makes things even more complicated in his life. He learns how to sell cars in unethical ways which conflicts him.

The other subplot has to do with a corrupt, rogue racist, sexist GM of the Southside auto dealership Reggie (Daniel Benzali, A View to a Kill). In addition to his dishonorable ways to sell automobiles to his employees, Reggie is also involved with drug dealers. He gets into serious trouble with one of his salesmen over drugs nearly costing him his life.

Suckers is a decent but overall, I felt it was just run of the mill film. I did not find it to be anything special, or funny during the comedic moments for that matter. It was billed as a comedy and it wound up turning into a crime film with lots of violence in the latter half. The climax with the loan sharks, drug dealers and the salesmen in a shootout which easily the best part of the next.

Given a new 4K master from Synapse Films, Suckers in HD looks outstanding. Colors look rich and bold, especially reds and blues. Outdoor scenes sizzle with great depth, while the interior shots also look brilliant and are rich in textures. Skin tones look natural with close-ups of the characters faces showing a lot of details. No artificial enhancements such as DNR were detected. Film grain is present throughout, giving the film a natural film-like appearance. This is another masterful job!

The English DTS-HD master audio 5.1 track for Suckers was fine overall with dialog musical scores and other noises coming in solidly, neither being too robust or too mild. Gunshots tended to be a bit more potent but nothing overwhelming.

Synapse Films offers a generous amount of supplemental content for Suckers. There is an audio commentary features co-writer Roger Nygard, co-writer/actor Joe Yannetty, cinematographer Nathan Hope, and composers Jimmie Wood and J.J. Holiday. They have plenty to say about Suckers! It is fun worthwhile commentary with the cast and crew taking a trip down memory lane.

This release includes a deleted scenes feature which is basically a couple of takes with Bobby and Donna’s daughter that were cut from the finished film.

Raw Takes features some uncut performances of the film which many of you many find interesting. The release also includes a trailer. But wait, there is still more!

This release includes bonus movie called Six Days in Roswell. The film is a 1999 documentary from director Timothy B. Johnson and producer Roger Nygard and runs a little shy of 90 minutes. And there are supplements for the film too, on this release! Six Days in Roswell has a commentary track features producer Roger Nygard, director Timothy B. Johnson, and host Rich Kronfeld. There is a making of feature and, a trailer for the film rounding off the extras.

You will not feel like a ‘sucker’ for picking this movie up. Excellent audio and video in addition to a second film, also with bonus materials makes this one a highly recommended release!
