There were actually quite a decent number of creature-features in the 90’s everything from Deep Rising to Mimic and beyond, but if we are going to rate them all, only one truly comes out on top and that would be 1990’s Tremors, directed by Ron Underwood and starring Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward. This film is creature feature perfection.
The film follows the residents of Perfection, Nevada, a town that absolutely does not live up to its name. Fred Ward plays Earl Bass, Kevin Bacon is Valentine McKee, these 2 are handyman in this town of 14. One day the duo decided to pack it up, and get out of there. Unfortunately, it’s a bit too late, and they find weird things are happening, and those weird things are just the beginning when they find the town is under attack by underground creatures (“graboids”). These creatures, are hungry, big, and ready to feast on the town!
Tremors, no pun-intended is horror-comedy perfection. The screenplay by S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock is as tight as they come blending a tight plot with pitch perfect humor that comes to life through the performances most notably the incredibly chemistry between Ward and Bacon. Of course, no creature feature worth a watch would be anything without its monsters, and the graboids are pre-CGI excellence. They are revealed slowly, in bit and pieces and work so well when they are revealed.
Arrow Video just jumped into the 4K arena, and this is basically a big way to introduce themselves to it. Tremors is presented in a GORGEOUS 1:85:1 1080p AVC encoded transfer, if I just want to cut to the chase, you basically need this if you’re a fan and have a 4k setup. The detail is excellent, colors pop, Tremors has never been treated this will visually. There is a nice HD 5.1 mix that sounds quite excellent as well.
Extras include a booklet of essays, 2 commentary tracks, deleted scenes, featurettes, interviews, trailers, short films, and so much more. This release is PACKED. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
