OK, so a few years back on the older web 1.0’ish version of EuroCultAV we reviewed To Love Ru- The Complete Collection. Our assessment of the time was that the first 2 seasons of To Love Ru (this Blu-ray set is the 2nd season) were a bit too on the campy and episodic , and that the show really picked up in the “Darkness” seasons. Motto – To Love Ru which has gotten a re-release last month through Sentai Filmworks, and while I do still feel somewhat the same knowing what I was getting into, made the episodic silliness a bit more palatable.
The show takes place about 1 year after the first season. LaLa is still obsessed with getting Rito to fall in love with her. However, Rito has a girlfriend and is focusing his loving attention on her. In the midst of this LaLa’s sisters have moved into Rito’s house and are stirring up additional comedic chaos. The show’s humor is build around romance and sexual comedy (but not too much this is rated 14 up haha). It’s a solid passable watch, and fun at times.
The main driving aspect for this re-release is a new English dub of the series. I listened to it, in comparison to the older one and found it quite solid. The comic timing and voice acting was great, and the new voices certainly fit the one of the show. The series is presented 1080p in an AVC code with a stable solid image with fine detail and color reproduction. Audio is handled by Japanese 2.0 and English 2.0 tracks that come through crisp and clear. Extras are clean opening and closings.
