Fury is a 1936 drama directed by Fritz Lang (The Big Heat) and stars screen legends Silvia Sidney and the great Spencer Tracy in one his greatest roles. Both actors had film careers that lasted for over 40 years! Fury is the tale of vengeance and morality of an innocent man who is nearly killed.

The plot of Fury is simple. Gas station owner Joe Wilson (Spencer Tracy, San Francisco, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, Bad Day at Black Rock) is on his way to meet his fiancée Katherine Grant (Silvia Sidney, Sabotage, Merrily We Go to Hell, Mars Attacks!) who gets arrested for kidnapping a child. Joe is completely innocent, and the evidence is also just as flimsy. The police hold him in prison. Word gets around on the streets that the law has caught one of the members of the gang involved in kidnapping a child. Before you know it, the gossip gets worse and even more false. The townspeople, which includes Kirby Dawson (Bruce Cabot, King Kong) decide they want to lynch poor Joe without a chance to prove his innocent. The lynch mob blows up the jail, leading to a raging inferno. Joe narrowly escapes and with his friends, plot his revenge on the town, by faking his own death and framing those who tried to kill him.

Fury is another outstanding, thoughtful picture directed by Fritz Lang. Spencer Tracy was incredible in this movie turning from a lovable guy to a man who is filled with hatred toward those who nearly killed him. Silvia Sidney also was amazing as she tries to get Joe back to normalcy, trying to show him that getting revenge in this manner was morally wrong, that they didn’t kill him. They did attempt to kill Joe and is easy to understand why he was taking steps to gain revenge through the court system. This movie makes for a great argument over what Joe did was right or wrong! The ending is ambiguous, leaving you the viewer to decide what happens next to Joe and Katherine.

Fury arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Warner Archive. The image quality is what one would expect from Warner. The black and white image is dynamite with clear whites, dark black levels, and a balanced greyscale. Details look sharp throughout with rich textures. Film grain is visible, giving Fury an organic appearance. There were no print damages detected while viewing the film.

For the audio, Warner uses an English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 mono soundtrack that is a bit too subtle and had to raise the volume up to higher than my normal levels to hear the sounds better. The usual age-related issues such hiss, pops, crackle were not detected. Frank Waxman’s score, dialogue and the sound effects can be heard clearly without distraction as long you turn the volume up a little bit.

This release has ported over the commentary track from the DVD by film director and historian Peter Bogdanovich contributes a start and stop commentary that include excerpts from his interview with Fritz Lang. Fury’s theatrical trailer is also part of the ported over supplemental package.

Fury is a must-see film for Lang’s masterful work. I think this is one of his best films that will have you thinking about what you just saw for days. You might even ask your own conscious what you would do if this happened to you! The Blu-ray is another superb effort by Warner and is easily highly recommended!
