Come September is romantic comedy film from 1961 that is directed by Robert Mulligan and starring legendary actor Rock Hudson, along with legendary musician Bobby Darin, Gina Lollobrigida, and Sandra Dee.
In this movie Rock Hudson (The Mirror Crack’d, Written on the Wind) stars as wealthy playboy Robert Taylor who visits his mistress Lisa Fellini (Gina Lollobrigida, Solomon and Sheba, Never So Few) at his Italian villa that he owns every September, but this year he is going to visit her in July! His arranger, Maurice Clavell (Walter Slezak, Lifeboat, Abbott and Costello in the Foreign Legion) has turned his house into a hotel and is hosting several teenage girls. Then some teenage boys come around, led by Tony who is played the great Bobby Darin, who was married to Sandra Dee at the time (she is one of the teenage girls in this film) camp outside Robert’s villa and start hitting on the girls!
Come September is a fun feel-good comedic film with the characters often found in awkward situations and messes that are hard for them to clean up. The acting is top-notch to go with a strong story and solid direction. Bobby Darin also sings a song called Multiplication and composed the Come September theme.
Come September arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Kino Lorber with a strong 1080p transfer. Daylight scenes look phenomenal with William H. Daniels’ cinematography really shining out with lively bright colors. The colors of the clothing the actors wear be it from the ravishing outfits Lisa Fellini wears to the scenery are vivid with rich textures throughout. Print damage such as lines appear infrequently, and overall, the details on this Blu-ray sparkle!
Kino Lorber’s Blu-Ray comes with a stellar English DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio track that does this movie good. Dialogue is clear and easy to understand, and Hans J. Salter musical scores are clear. The music does not overpower the dialogue. Action sounds such as cars racing around are also quite clear. No hissing, crackling, or popping sounds were detected.
The Blu-ray for Come September also has a couple of extras including an audio commentary track from Film Historian David Del Valle and Filmmaker David DeCoteau give another entertaining track about the film, such as who was supposed to be in the film to go with other background behind-the-scenes information. Without a doubt, this commentary is worth listen if you enjoy the movie.
Trailers consist of the other extra and include Come September, A Farewell To Arms, The Tarnished Angels, The Last Sunset, Trapeze, Buona Sera Mrs. Campbell, Portrait In Black, Captain Newman M.D. and The Great Imposter.
Come September is another great release by Kino. The superior audio and video quality to go with a commentary track for this great film makes this release recommended!
