The last Saturday of every month if you have read this website long enough is “Movie Party Crew” night. Every Saturday going on 8 years, we have a hashtag, that you can follow, and either just read along or comment on Twitter at 10 PM EST. It is myself, and Richard of the amazing Doomed Moviethon most of the time with others rotating in and out (basically JOIN US), during one of these sessions many Saturdays ago, Girls Nite Out was picked. A film I had never seen before, but had been put out previously by Media Blasters on DVD, and is now finally seeing a Blu-ray release via Arrow Video.

The film takes place at DeWitt College on the eve of its annual “Scavenger Hunt”. Someone has stolen the costume from the college’s “beat” mascot outfitted it with claws and is now killing students. That’s your story, that is literally ALL YOU NEED. The film has a minor scare at the beginning and then slows down, but it works because we get some 80’s style college humor antics picture Animal House B-Sides and you’re on the right path, and then picks up around the 40 minute mark.

Apparently, Girls Nite Out played as double feature with Pieces, and that just seems like sheer BRILLIANCE to me. Pieces is my favorite or at least in my top 5 favorite horror films of all time, and is an all-time hysterical college horror. Girls Nite Out while nowhere near those heights certainly would offer a great b-side to Pieces over the top shock nature. The film itself doesn’t really have main characters and is broken up into vignettes, but that allows for more horror to come through.

Arrow Video presents Girls Nite Out in a 1:85:1 1080p transfer that I can best describe as “this is as good as it gets”. It came from multiple print sources, with no negative option, and while I can say it looks very film like it does look a good deal beat up at times with scratching and other assorted marks. Detail is fine, this isn’t exactly a colorful film, but what’s there is reproduced nicely. Audio is English mono and comes across clear, I did not detect any issues. Extras include 5 interviews with the cast, a commentary track, an archival interview, and a trailer. RECOMMENDED.
