Time Out of Mind is Film Noir drama from 1947 that is directed by legendary director Robert Siodmak who directed some Noirs in his career which includes Criss Cross, The Killers, and Cry of the City

The story focuses on Christopher Fortune (Robert Hutton, The Slime People, The Invisible Invaders, They Came from Beyond Space) who has decided he wants to pursue a career in music rather than for his rich father’s sea business. This causes drama with the family as his father, Captain Fortune (Leo G. Carroll, North by Northwest, Spellbound) had already made plans for his life to work for his company. To make matters worse, the housekeeper, Kate Fernald (Phyllis Calvert, Appointment with Danger, Fanny by Gaslight) has fallen in love with him but she wants him to marry someone of his own social class! Christopher’s sister, Clarissa Fortune Ella Raines (Phantom Lady, The Web) is on hand to help her brother when he needs her the most, as he is so unhappy that he becomes an alcoholic!

I enjoyed this film. Director Siodmak gets a lot of mileage of out the cast, especially Robert Hutton, who is mostly known for being cast in low-budget B movies. The film has plenty of atmospheric moments to give the film that Noir feeling to go with the excellent performances by the cast.

Robert Siodmak’s Time Out of Mind receives a Blu-ray release from Kino Lorber. Given a brand new 2K scan, the image looks stunning, looking rich in detail with deep textures throughout. Black levels look nice and inky, to go with a balanced greyscale. Scenery looks finely detailed.  The video quality is definitely stunning with a nice cleaned up, polished look with a minimal of amount of speckles, grain or lines, in fact, I don’t recall seeing any real age-old blemishes to the image. Film grain is present, and no digital enhancements appear to have been used

Kino’s English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 soundtrack for this Blu-ray is also flawless with dialogue and music coming in clearly. The music comes in as the most aggressive. No hissing, crackling or other age-old anomalies were detected. Optional English Subtitles are available

This release has an audio commentary track with Author/Film Historian Lee Gambin and Costume Historian Elissa Rose

And some Kino Lorber trailers from their vast catalog of releases.

Fans of Robert Siodmak shouldn’t debate as to whether this release should be picked up or not! Of course it should! Time Out of Mind is a great overlooked film and has been given an excellent release by Kino Lorber! Recommended!
